Apply to deregister or decommission a vehicle

You can submit the application either in person, or through your representative, at the relevant registration authority, or online via the i-Kfz portal. You can use the i-Kfz portal if your vehicle was last registered no earlier than 1 January 2015, so that the required security code is already included on Part I of the registration document (formerly the vehicle registration certificate). No identification of the vehicle owner is required for online deregistration.

If you wish to deregister your vehicle online, please follow these steps:

1. Go to the i-Kfz portal of the relevant registration authority at
2. Enter the vehicle’s registration number into the application form on the i-Kfz portal at
3. Revealthe security code on Part I of the registration certificate
4. Remove the stickers covering the stamp markings on the number plate. Please note: Once thesecurity codes have been revealed, the number plate is no longer valid and the vehicle must not be driven on public roads.
5. Enterthe exposedsecurity codes into the application form on the i-Kfz portal.
6. If necessary, reserve the number plate in case you wish to re-register the vehicle with the same number plate in the same registration district at a later date.
7. Application details are validated automatically.
8. Online payment of the fee: You will be redirected directly to the payment service provider. The choice of payment method varies depending on the registration authority. You can usually pay by credit card or PayPal.
9. Confirm your entries and submit the application.
10. The application is automatically checked in real time.
11. Confirmation of de-registration is immediately available online.
12. The registration authority sends a letter informing the vehicle owner of the de-registration by post to the address held for the owner in the Central Vehicle Register (ZFZR).
