Procedure descriptions

Reporting the employment of a pregnant or breastfeeding woman

As an employer, you must notify the responsible regional council if a woman has informed you that she is pregnant.

Employers within the meaning of the Maternity Protection Act also include

  • Trainers
  • Internship supervisors, for example at universities and colleges or vocational schools
  • School headmasters
  • Organisers of workshops for the disabled

If a woman is breastfeeding and you have not reported the previous pregnancy, you must also inform the competent authority.

Example cases: A woman returns to work for you after a long break or starts working for you again.

To make this possible, pregnant women should inform their employer of their pregnancy as soon as they become aware of it, also in order to be able to claim the protection to which they are entitled under the Maternity Protection Act.

You can request written confirmation from the doctor or midwife treating you stating the expected date of delivery. You must pay the costs incurred for this if they are not covered by statutory health insurance.
